today

it's finally halloween, yay! definitely my favorite holiday. tonight the usual suspects are gathering at gundam's house for tim burton movies (the nightmare before christmas, sleepy hollow, beetlejuice, edward scissorhands, and possibly batman) and candy and more pumpkin carving and whatnot. i carved the one in the camstill above last night; my apartment smells like singed gourd now from the candle scorching the top a little bit, but it's not a bad smell. i had it lit and sitting in my window for most of the night.

i think i'm going to do some sort of cat thing for the gala tonight. i've got some fuzzy black cat ears i picked up a couple weeks ago, and i'll do whiskers and a nose in eyeliner or something. and i have a collar and leash. gundam and i were going to do some elaborate bladerunner thing - he was going to be deckard, i would have been pris - but we never got around to assembling all the various costume bits we needed. which is okay. there's always next year, and i do like my cat ears an awful lot anyway.

listening to the nightmare before christmas soundtrack now. great stuff. time for me to hop in the shower and start figuring out what to wear. i've been feeling kind of crappy for the past few days - my tonsils acting up again - but this morning my fever seems to be gone and while my throat is still pretty sore i feel on the whole not bad at all. i was worried i was still going to be sickish today, and gundam said he was going to cancel the gala if i didn't feel well enough to come, but it looks like that's not going to be a problem.

tonight should be fun. if i get my stuff together in time, i'm going to head into the city early and have lunch with spencer at hale & hearty soups, but either way i'm meeting gundam and obScUruS after they get out of work. i owe colin's coworker delfin a cupcake for this sketch and i'm bringing enough for colin and gundam too. then we're all hopping the lirr out to massapequa and carving pumpkins and handing out candy to the kiddies until the rest of the crowd show up. gundam has work off tomorrow so we get to sleep in, too. woohoo.

i'm sorry, am i missing something? was i absent the day it was decided that casual racism is now de rigeur among long island teenagers? i don't know if it's that i'm older or that i'm from massachusetts or that i have friends of more races, creeds, and sexual orientations than i can count, but i'm fucking scoobied by this phenomenon. do these kids honestly not see how incredibly offensive it is to loudly point out every non-caucasian person they see, to refer to muslims as "sand niggers", or to boast that "there's not a single nigger on my block"? to call every race that is not your own collectively "them" and talk about the "good ones" as the ones who "act like they're white"? am i the only one shocked by this? fuck you if you think this kind of behavior is acceptable in my presence or on my irc server, and fuck you futher for trying to defend it.

what set this off? well, a number of things, but primarily this kid - his behavior in general and this entry in particular, from which i quote: "I don't really consider myself a real full time racist, but more of someone who gets a little antzy when I'm surrounded by them or when one walks down my block...because there are no blacks on my block."

i find it incredibly depressing that it's almost 2002 and this shit is still more common than spam in my inbox.

heading into the city tomorrow afternoon to drop off a cupcake for delfin and take gundam out to dinner at this indian restaurant on lexington ave in honor of our three month. i got him a couple of little presents too but my favorite is a shuriken i ordered a while ago that just arrived today, which i bought because of that passage in neuromancer. i got one for myself as well and it's already pinned to the wall above my monitor, a la case.

still sickish, but getting better. i've been taking the mad vitamin c and other good stuff, and drinking an obscene amount of tee. woo.

today

picked up killfile from the airport yesterday; luckily lunacrow remembered to check the airline's site before we left, as it turned out his connection from milan was over an hour late. we still got to jfk fairly early, though, so we stopped at wok & roll for noodles et cetera. eventually killfile turned up and we hopped a cab back to my house, where we marvelled at various accents and took pictures with cat ears and watched slc punk.

kf, insisting he wasn't feeling jetlagged at all, wanted to see a little of the city so we headed into the village for dinner. did a little shopping on st mark's first - i needed gloves and a hat, for one thing, since out of nowhere it's suddenly fucking freezing here. i need to get a new coat as well. eventually we wandered down to dojo, where we shivered through veggie tempura and pumpkin pie in the outdoor cafe section (i have no idea why we sat outside). after dinner we walked up to Strict9's building to see if he was home, which he was. we all piled into his apartment and had some cider until killfile was ready to pass out (what with the time difference and the sixteen hours on planes), at which point we went back to brooklyn.

got up ass-early this morning to escort killfile to the port authority so he could catch his bus to vermont, got a mediocre breakfast at "green trees" in the building, and waited around till they started boarding. at this point i was feeling kind of crappy - all the changing weather and my god damned motherfucking uppity tonsils, and me wandering around without a hat have combined to give me another whopper of a cold, so gundam and i headed back to my house and curled up in bed with the sunday times and some coffee, and watched american beauty. now i feel even more like crap but that's ok. i will live.

tomorrow i am supposed to hang out with james, but we haven't spoken in a couple of days so i don't know whether that's happening or not. we wanted to stop in his hmv this morning but it wasn't open yet, even after we waited with limey for an hour or so. oh well. tuesday is mine and gundam's three month anniversary; if i can afford it i am taking us out for indian at cafe spice on university place. and then of course wednesday is our little hallween thing. hooray!

today

it's been decided. i'm heading to seattle in a couple weeks (possible november fifteenth) for a weekend before i go back to school and everything gets crazy, and then gundam and i are going back again later when he can take time off work. i checked fares and everything and there's a startlingly cheap one if i book before november seventh, so i'm going for it. i'll be staying with gabe, so no hotel costs or anything. i am unbelievably excited. tycho also says he can hook me up with my copy of the penny arcade limited edition hardcover book while i'm there, so they can personalize it for me and everything. i can't wait.

gundam is here; we watched crouching tiger again and are prolly going to bed soon since we're both really tired. who can say?

watching skinny puppy videos. woo. we never ended up getting to ikea today; we got to the mall mad early to catch the bus and ended up just getting coffee and wandering around. we'll probably go either tomorrow or next weekend. no rush. i finally have a new coat; this army surplus thing i found for fifteen bucks. it's comfy. i think i want to get a real coat eventually though, preferably before it gets too cold. this thing will be good over a hoodie or whatever but it's not going to keep me warm come january.

matt, killah, and ricky are here. we watched slc punk and bladerunner, and some other random stuff. fun. i think i'm getting sick, probably because of the weather getting colder and everything. my throat is fucking killing. i guess it's time to start popping the vitamin c and drinking tea again. hooray. even with getting sick and needing a coat and everything though, i still vastly prefer cold weather to warm. i can't fucking stand the summer. at least now if i'm cold i just get a blanket or something, you know? in the summer all you can do is wait for it to be over.

yeah, so. barnes & noble with gundam after work. got a bunch of stuff, including the granta book of the short story, which i've been wanting to grab for ages. edited by richard ford. num. also another gibson novel and some other stuff that escapes my memory right now.

some bjork thing is on hbo. we watched invader zim earlier, and powerpuff girls, yay. an unfortunate chinese food experience; i asked for pan fried noodles and got some soupy vegetable glop with what looked like chicken but may have been deranged mushroom. but there was white rice and there were chopsticks so it wasn't entirely bad.

gundam and i are gonna head out to ikea tomorrow. there was a bunch of stuff i wanted to get but didn't when i went with my parents, and gundam hasn't been in a million and two years, so how could we not. i'm specifically thinking i need some sort of lamp for my bedroom and possibly a small table for my living room. but we'll see.

some sort of anthrax scare on the subway today; there was closing of stations and delaying of trains but i eventually made it into the city more or less on time. a bunch of trains skipped stops to make up lost time, i guess. i'm not sure if there actually was anthrax anywhere or if it was just a hoax, but i gues it doesn't really matter since the reaction is more or less the same.

pondering batcave tomorrow. matthew was going to come, but now he might not, and if it turns out that nobody we know is going we probably won't. but of course it all remains to be seen how we feel tomorrow evening.

today

the bad news: when gundam and i were scrambling out of our cab at my house last night in a flurry of stuff-grabbing and tip-deciding, he left his beloved bag on the seat and didn't realize till we were upstairs. in the bag: his gameboy advance and all its games, his discman, some cds, three movies i had ordered from bn.com, some money, and a bunch of other stuff. the bag also had sentimental value since he had me sew on a biohazard patch and it was covered in pins and stuff like mine. so, no good. however, pumpkin pie makes everything better, and i did in fact happen to have a pumpkin pie i picked up at the farmer's market in union square, so we had some. it could have been worse - he didn't lose his id or his keys, at least, and he was at least at my house so i could spot him some cash for the train and whatnot. but it does really, truly suck about the gba and cd player and everything. no fun.

before this fateful cab ride, we'd been to generation records (new atr shirt for me) and the belgian fries place on 4th. not quite as tasty as the one near st mark's place, but cheaper and with places to sit. and near generation records. and still mighty tasty. we had two cones of fries with a variety of hard to pronounce sauces. yum. spencer was planning on joining us, but spencer plans a lot of things.

i'm rereading the hobbit. i want to get through the whole series again before the movie comes out in whenever the fuck it comes out (i'm sure someone will remind me). conveniently enough, my parents brought a bunch of my old books and whatnot when they drove up a few weeks ago, including the relevant tolkien. hooray. it's been fucking years since i even thought about opening one of them again, but they're still great stories. and i already read all the new books i bought last week (especially fear and loathing in las vegas which i decided i'd better read since i've seen the movie so many times).

i need to get a little coffee table or end table or something to go next to my futon. other than that it's working out quite well as a couch and is, in fact, infinitely more comfortable when folded up as such than it was as a bed (for so many years).

i'm hungry, but not quite in the mood for leftover pumpkin pie, as appealing as i'm sure it will be later. maybe garlic knots from rocco's, where i like to go because they manage to make the word 'garlic' into three syllables.

today

i was working in the lab late one night, when my eyes beheld an eerie sight. my monster from his slab began to rise, when suddenly to my surprise he did the mash (he did the monster mash).

gundam and i have been thinking about our halloween plans and decided that we're going to get dressed up (i'm thinking tank girl, what with the hair and all) and hand out candy to trick or treaters in the early evening, then have the usual suspects come over and watch a pile of tim burton movies. this weekend or next weekend we're also gonna carve pumpkins, which is probably my single favorite halloween thing. this year i might even go for the whole toasting pumpkin seeds thing if i don't get lazy. pumpkin seeds rock.

as for movies, i'm thinking sleepy hollow, the nightmare before christmas, beetlejuice, and maybe a couple more. suggestions? we were thinking tim burton just because his style is so perfect for the occasion, but it doesn't have to be exclusively him.

i really fucking love october. it needs to be more like fifty weeks long instead of four, though. hooray!

today

i can't believe it's already the middle of october. not fair, i've been waiting for it to be october since may, and now it's going by so fast. that's ok though. at least it's not summer anymore. i'm not a huge fan of winter, but i infinitely prefer being cold to being hot.

dunno what's up for today. gundam and i have been hanging out with quatoria for the past couple of days since he's in nyc until monday i think. tonight we were thinking about batcave but i don't know if we're going to end up going; we might be more up for a lazy night in. today or tomorrow i think we're going to head into manhattan during the day and go to generation or something.

yesterday i was unbelievably tired for some reason; i slept like twelve hours and still felt exhausted. it's like i never fully woke up all day. i kept dozing off on the train and at gundam's while we were watching movies. gundam was really tired too and we ended up kicking everyone out really early because we needed to sleep. i feel better today but still not exactly full of energy.
